How nitrous oxide sedation works

Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is inhaled through a small nose mask. It is also called “laughing gas” because of the calming and relaxing effect it has when it is inhaled. While nitrous oxide is commonly used for patients with dental anxieties, it can be beneficial in several other scenarios as well:

Patients with an overactive gag reflex
Patients who become claustrophobic when receiving dental treatment
Patients who are receiving multiple dental procedures back-to-back and will be sitting in the dental chair for an extended period

To use nitrous oxide, we simply place a nose mask on your face just prior to your treatment and wait for a few moments for it to take effect. We keep the gas running and closely monitor your oxygen levels throughout your treatment. When we finish your dental procedures, we will turn off the nitrous oxide and administer oxygen through the same nose mask for a few minutes to help neutralize the nitrous oxide’s effects quickly.
