If you ever have a dental emergency, you can count on the team at sherway dentistry for prompt, compassionate care. However, we’d rather help our patients in the Mississauga and Etobicoke ON area avoid the panic, discomfort, and unforeseen expense of urgent treatment. Our dentists, Dr. Tuli offers this sound advice to help dodge unexpected dental problems.
Common causes of dental emergencies
Most dental emergencies are either an immediate or latent result of trauma. For example, you might dislodge a tooth playing touch football, and need attention right away to save it. Or, you could take an elbow to the mouth on the basketball court. Your teeth seem fine, then months or years later you wake with acute pain and a swollen face – an abscess requiring root canal therapy.
Simple steps to avoid urgent dental care
- Wear a custom-fit mouthguard anytime you participate (including practice sessions) in a contact sport, or a recreational activity that might involve a fall such as bicycling or horseback riding.
- Do not bite down or directly into very hard foods like raw carrots, un-popped corn kernels, or hard or chewy candy.
- Don't chew on ice, pens, fingernails, or other hard objects.
- Teeth are made for grinding food – use other appropriate tools to open product packaging or cut string.
- Practice good oral hygiene. Brush after eating. Limit between meal snacks, soda, and sweets. Floss before bedtime.
- Maintain regular visits to sherway dentistry for cleaning and examination. Our dentists can usually detect a potential problem early, before it becomes severe, painful, and expensive.
