Treatment for periodontal disease saves gums and health for our patients near Etobicoke and Mississauga

For several years now, we have been hearing about the importance of gum health. The inflammation that begins so subtly is now recognized for the health implications it may cause. At sherway dentistry, we perform a thorough examination of the teeth, looking carefully for signs of periodontal or gum disease. We also educate patients who visit our Etobicoke practice on the care of teeth and gums to help them avoid this potentially serious condition. If you live in our immediate area or in Mississauga, we are happy to schedule a convenient appointment time in which one of our dentists can evaluate your oral health.

New research confirms the consequences of untreated gum disease

Findings from a recent study on periodontal disease have been published in Infection and Immunity. Researchers from Örebro University in Sweden studied animal models seeking ways to identify biomarkers for both periodontal disease and coronary disease. The bacteria that have been found in both periodontal disease and coronary artery plaque are Porphyromonas gingivalis. While we are now able to identify the inherent risks of gum disease, a way to prevent the migration of bacteria and cells has yet to be developed. There is, however, a way to prevent gum disease altogether!

Professional care to guard your smile and your health

One of the primary services offered in general dentistry is prevention and early detection of gum disease. In order for your dentist to help you guard your smile and your health, it is necessary to practice vigilance in oral hygiene as well as in routine dental care.

Professional checkups and cleanings are performed with the intent of preventing uncomfortable dental problems. While many people fear dental visits, nervousness can be much less intense when the care you receive is consistent and does not require extensive treatments. We encourage our patients to visit us every four to six months. The timing of visits has been determined based on solid research showing how much can happen to the teeth and the gums in this period.

At sherway dentistry, we provide gentle care in a compassionate manner. We get to know you and your needs and we work with you to protect your teeth, your gums, and your overall wellness.

Don't let gum disease have a negative impact on your health. Contact our office at 416.639.2546 to arrange a convenient appointment time.
